A quick guide to creating productions

To start a new production, click on the top menu PRODUCE > Productions > Create New.

Select Documents to Produce

There are three ways to select which documents you would like to produce: include/exclude tags, saved search, or search history. Producing by tags is the most common way of producing in DISCO. Documents with tags excluded from the production will NOT be produced, even if a document also has an included tag (that is, exclusionary tags trump inclusionary ones). When producing by search, we force the user to produce from a saved search or their own search history, which guarantees that they have run the search at least once and had a chance to verify the results.

Based on your selection, a plain English sentence will appear and describe how many documents will be in the production as well as what documents will be included or excluded.


Bates stamps are used to track specific pages in a document, or an entire electronic file that cannot be imaged to pages (e.g., a video file). This allows the attorneys to refer to Bates stamped pages when they are presenting the information to opposing counsel or in court. DISCO’s default Bates stamp methodology is below (though of course you can change this be whatever you want):

  • Prefix = Name of Matter (default)
  • Starting Number = 000001 (default)

Additional stamps are usually used to notate confidential documents, but can be used to apply any textual stamp to documents with a certain tag. They appear in the lower left corner of all near-native documents within that production. Any number of additional stamps can be created for a production, and will be stacked vertically.

Download Your Production 

Choose advanced options, or click "Create" to begin your production. When the production is done, it creates a folder in ZIP file called VOL0001 (unless there are multiple volumes, or the starting volume title has been changed). Within this folder, each document produced has three versions, one within each of the following sub-folders:

  1. DOCS (PDF images) or IMAGES (TIFF or JPEG images)
  2. NATIVES (original file type for documents that are rendered as natives)
  3. OCR (one text file per document)
  4. Load File

Depending on size of a production, it may take hours to complete. This is normal. If there is a production error, a ticket is automatically created with DISCO's support team. If the production takes over 10 hours, contact Once complete, DISCO will email the user who requested the production. Anyone with access to the database may go to the Produce page to view or download any production.
