How to Search for Hidden Content

What is hidden content?

Hidden content refers to content in Microsoft Office documents that is not easily visible, including comments, revisions, and speaker notes. When processing files, DISCO identifies these items and makes them searchable.

DISCO can detect the following content in Microsoft Office documents:

Word Powerpoint Excel

Comments

Hidden text

Invisible text*

Revisions

*Invisible text is text that is the same color as the document’s background. For example, white text on a white background.

You can find documents with hidden content by:

  • Searching for all documents with hidden content
  • Searching for documents with specific types of hidden content
  • Searching precisely within hidden content fields

How to search for all documents with hidden content

  1. Click the search bar and select Search builder.Picture1.png
  2. Scroll to the Metadata section and drag Has any hidden content to the right.
  3. Select Yes and click Run search.
  4. The results will include any documents that have any of the hidden content types DISCO can detect.Picture2.png

How to search for specific kinds of hidden content

  1. Click the search bar and select Search builder.Picture1.png
  2. Scroll to the Metadata section and drag Specific hidden content to the right.
  3. Select the type of content you want to find (such as comments) and click Run search.
  4. The results will show any documents with that type of hidden content.Picture3.png

How to search within hidden content fields

Content found within comments, hidden text, invisible text, and speaker notes are extracted and placed into searchable fields.

  1. Click the search bar and select Search builder.Picture1.png
  2. Scroll to the Metadata section and drag the appropriate hidden content type to the right. You can choose from Comment, Speaker note, Hidden text, and Invisible text.
  3. Enter your search terms (what terms should be in the comment, speaker note, hidden text, or invisible text). For example, to find comments that contain the word delete, type delete into the field.Picture4.png
  4. Click Run Search.

To find hidden content without using the search builder, type the appropriate search syntax directly into the search bar:
