Cecilia doc summaries is a free generative AI feature that uses a large language model (LLM) to provide a summary of individual documents at a user’s request. With doc summaries, users can expedite review, especially of longer or more technical documents. Users can also use the document summary to quickly orient on the content and overall message of the document, and apply or QC work-product such as tagging.
This feature is currently available on a limited basis. If you would like to enable this feature for your database, please contact your DISCO representative. Doc summaries is only available for documents in the Active Review data space. Users in databases with Cecilia Q&A enabled can generate any number of summaries.
Use of Cecilia doc summaries is subject to the AI supplementary terms, which can be found at https://www.csdisco.com/legal/ai-supplementary-terms. If you would like to disallow the use of Cecilia doc summaries in your database, you can disable access to this feature via custom roles.
Role permissions
Access to Cecilia doc summaries via custom roles can be controlled through feature permissions in the Review Team settings page.
By default, all DISCO standard roles (Admin, Restricted Reviewer, and Reviewer) are granted access to Cecilia doc summaries.
By default, existing and new custom roles are granted access to Cecilia doc summaries.
To grant or disable access to the feature for custom roles, ensure that the following box is checked or unchecked in Review Team > Roles > Feature Permissions > DOCUMENT VIEWER > Summary (beta):
You can also change the permission to "view" or "manage":
- View: A user can view a generated doc summary only
- Manage: A user can generate a summary, regenerate a summary, and delete a summary
How to use Cecilia doc summaries
- From the search page, open a document
- In the viewer, click the "Summary" icon to expand its sidebar
- Once you have identified a document that you want to summarize, click the blue "Summarize this document" button in order to generate a summary for the document
- Once the summary is generated, you can find it here in the sidebar
- You can also regenerate or delete the summary for a given document through the following actions:
- Note: Re-generating a summary will overwrite your previous summary with no ability to view previously generated summaries

NOTE: As you consume summaries or single doc Q&A's, you will see a counter display indicating how many free requests you have left for the day. Once your limit is reached, you will be unable to generate (or regenerate) additional document summaries or single doc Q&A's until the daily reset. Databases with Cecilia Q&A enabled will not have a summary or single doc Q&A limit.
FAQ
Q: Is Cecilia doc summaries free?
A: Yes. Cecilia doc summaries, like Cecilia Q&A (single-doc), is a free feature available on Ediscovery databases. If your database doesn't have Cecilia Q&A, each user with the single-doc Q&A feature permission and/or the Cecilia doc summaries feature permission enabled can request up to a combined limit of 50 free single-document questions and/or doc summaries per user per database per day. A database with Cecilia Q&A can request any number of single-document questions and/or document summaries.
Q: What file types are supported?
A: Any document that has Text associated with it and is in the Active Review data space is capable of being summarized. However, the AI-generated summary relies only on what is available in the Text field. As a result, documents with tabular or image data (such as MS Excel or CSV files, MS PowerPoint files, MS Word files with tables/charts/diagrams, images, etc.) may not receive as good of summaries compared to traditional Word/PDF files.
Q: How many summaries can I generate if my database doesn't have Cecilia Q&A?
A: Each user with Cecilia doc summaries enabled can generate up to 50 free summaries per day if your database doesn't have Cecilia Q&A. This user limit is per database, and not across all databases a user may be part of. A database with Cecilia Q&A can generate any number of summaries.
Q: Does regenerating a summary result in a different summary?
A: Yes. You can use the "Regenerate summary" option to generate a different type of summary. Note: re-generating a summary will replace your previously generated summaries with no ability to view previously generated summaries.
Q: Does regenerating a summary count towards my daily limit?
A: Yes.
Q: If I generate a summary for a document, am I the only one that can see the summary, or will other users in the database be able to see the summary?
A: Any user with the proper feature permission (ie. Summary enabled in the permissions page with view or manage capabilities) will be able to see generated summaries for a document.
Q: Does Cecilia doc summaries work with documents that contain languages outside of English?
A: Yes. Cecilia doc summaries can work with all the languages that in-app translations supports.
Q: Is there a limit on the length of documents that I can summarize?
A: Yes. There is a minimum text character limit of 300 characters. There is also a maximum text character limit of 250,000 characters (50,000 characters for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean documents).
Q: When does the daily limit reset for databases without Cecilia Q&A?
A: The limit for Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) and Cecilia doc summaries reset at 3:00 AM CDT (12:00 AM UTC-8).
Q: Why am I not able to generate summaries for documents in ECA?
A: Cecilia doc summaries is only available for documents in the Active Review data space. Note: min/max character limits and usage limits still apply even once a document is promoted from ECA to Active Review.
Q: Is my document's content being used to train LLMs when I generate a doc summary?
A: No. Your document's content is not used to train an LLM. Your generated document summary is also not made available to the LLM provider. Your data remains entirely yours. In addition, your document's content is not sent to a LLM until a summary is requested/generated for a given a document.
Q: If I have Cecilia Q&A purchased and enabled on a database, am I able to summarize documents that are in ECA?
A: No. Cecilia doc summaries is only available for documents in the Active Review data space.
Q: Can a doc summary be viewed/generated in the review stage document viewer?
A: Yes. You can control access to doc summaries individually through review stage settings. By default, doc summaries will be disabled for existing and new review stages. An Admin will need to enable this setting when creating or editing a review stage.
Q: Can I search for all documents that have a doc summary generated for them?
A: Not currently.
