Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) is a free generative AI feature that uses a large language model (LLM) to answer questions of an individual document at a user’s request. Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) allows users to interrogate individual documents from within their database to determine the facts of a document quickly. Simply ask a natural language question, and Cecilia will give you an answer pulled from the information in that document.
This feature is in Crawl. Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) is only available for documents in the Active Review data space. Users in databases with Cecilia Q&A enabled can ask any number of questions using Cecilia Q&A (single-doc).
Use of Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) is subject to the AI supplementary terms, which can be found at https://www.csdisco.com/legal/ai-supplementary-terms. If you would like to disallow the use of Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) in your database, you can disable access to this feature via custom roles.
Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) is useful any time you find an important document you wish to learn more about. Some use cases include:
- Simplifying concepts from complex or dense documents
- Ex. What is the Unforced Capacity requirement, and how is it calculated?
- Instantly identifying particular provisions within contracts, such as indemnification language or the governing law
- Ex. Is there a limitation of liability?
- Deriving insights from foreign language documents without needing to speak the language or translate the entire document
- Ex. What does the document mention about allocation of installed capacity rights for external Unforced Capacity Supply?
- Asking for answers in specific formats to accelerate work product preparation, like summaries in the form of a timeline
- Ex. Summarize the events mentioned in the document in the form of a timeline
Role permissions
Access to Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) via custom roles can be controlled through feature permissions in the Review Team settings page.
By default, all DISCO standard roles (Admin, Restricted Reviewer, and Reviewer) are granted access to Cecilia Q&A (single-doc).
By default, existing custom roles are NOT granted access to Cecilia Q&A (single-doc). Newly created custom roles are granted access to Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) by default.
To grant or disable access to the feature for custom roles, ensure that the following box is checked or unchecked in Review Team > Roles > Feature Permissions > DOCUMENT VIEWER > Cecilia Q&A (Single-Doc) (Beta):
How to use Cecilia Q&A (single-doc)
- From the search page, open a document
- In the viewer, click the "Q&A" icon to expand its sidebar
- Input your query in the text input box located at the bottom of the sidebar, and click the "send" icon or "Return" or "Enter" on your keyboard to submit the query. Note: your questions and answers are visible only to you and no other user added to the database.
- You can also clear your chat history for a specific document by clicking the "..." button in the top right corner of the sidebar and clicking "Clear chat history". A confirmation dialog will appear asking if you are sure that you want to clear your chat history.
- Clearing your chat history only clears your chat history with respect to a specific document you asked questions in. Clearing your single-doc chat history doesn't clear your chat history with Cecilia Q&A.

NOTE: As you consume summaries or single doc Q&A's, you will see a counter display indicating how many free requests you have left for the day. Once your limit is reached, you will be unable to generate (or regenerate) additional document summaries or single doc Q&A's until the daily reset. Databases with Cecilia Q&A enabled will not have a summary or single doc Q&A limit.

Q: Is Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) the same feature as Cecilia Q&A?
A: No. Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) is a generative AI feature optimized for use on a single document.
Q: Is Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) free?
A: Yes. Cecilia Q&A (single-doc), like Cecilia doc summaries, is a free feature available on Ediscovery databases. If your database doesn't have Cecilia Q&A, each user with the single-doc Q&A feature permission and/or the Cecilia doc summaries feature permission enabled can request up to a combined limit of 50 free single-document questions and/or doc summaries per user per database per day. A database with Cecilia Q&A can request any number of single-document questions and/or document summaries.
Q: Do I have access to Cecilia Q&A if I can use Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) on my database?
A: No, having access to Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) does not automatically grant access to Cecilia Q&A. However, purchasing Cecilia Q&A allows for unlimited document summarization via Cecilia doc summaries and unlimited single-document questions.
Q: What file types are supported?
A: Any document that has Text associated with it and is in the Active Review data space is capable of being queried via Cecilia Q&A (single-doc). However, the AI-generated response relies only on what is available in the Text field. As a result, documents with tabular or image data (such as MS Excel or CSV files, MS PowerPoint files, MS Word files with tables/charts/diagrams, images, etc.) may not receive as good of response compared to traditional Word/PDF files.
Q: Does Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) work with documents that contain languages outside of English?
A: Yes. Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) can work with all the languages that in-app translations supports.
Q: Is there a limit on the length of documents that I can query via Cecilia Q&A (single-doc)?
A: Yes. There is a minimum text character limit of 300 characters. There is also a maximum text character limit of 250,000 characters (50,000 characters for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean documents).
Q: When does the daily limit reset for databases without Cecilia Q&A?
A: The limit for Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) and Cecilia doc summaries reset at 3:00 AM CDT (12:00 AM UTC-5).
Q: Does Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) work for documents in the ECA data space?
A: No. Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) is only available for documents in Active Review. Note: min/max character limits and usage limits still apply even once a document is promoted from ECA to Active Review.
Q: Is my document's content being used to train LLMs when I ask a question?
A: No. Your document's content is not used to train an LLM. Your question-answer history is also not made available to the LLM provider. Your data remains entirely yours. In addition, your document's content is not sent to a LLM until a question is asked with respect to a given document.
Q: If I have Cecilia Q&A purchased and enabled on a database, am I able to use Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) on documents that are in ECA?
A: No. Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) is only available for documents in the Active Review data space regardless of whether you have Cecilia Q&A enabled on a database.
Q: Can single-doc Q&A be viewed/queried in the review stage document viewer?
A: Yes. You can control access to Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) individually through review stage settings. By default, Cecilia Q&A (single-doc) will be disabled for existing and new review stages. An Admin will need to enable this setting when creating or editing a review stage.
Q: Can I search for all documents that have a single-document Q&A history associated with them?
A: Not currently.
